Be very careful when interviewing with Chemonics – they might try to bait and switch and convince you to take a lower-level position with much lower pay. Here’s my story: I applied for a senior level position requesting only 5 years of program management experience (for reference, I have around 15 years of work experience total and 5 years that are directly relevant to the position). My second interview with a panel went well. The next business day, HR contacted me and said I might be “a bit too junior” in just one area that did not specify the required number of years (note: just one area out of about 25 points from the job description). I was then invited to apply to a newly posted lower-level position, asking for only 3 years of professional experience. Chemonics mentioned I would likely “excel quickly…” but for MUCH lower pay. In fact, at my current job, I already earn more than the pay band for the lower-level position and my current position requires more than 5 years of relevant experience. I then had a follow up call with HR the next day and I was told the salary for the lower-level would be non-negotiable and I would likely be offered something at the midpoint of a salary range – in other words, a huge pay cut for me. My suggestion for job applicants: Know your worth and don’t let yourself be talked into a position you did not apply for. It seems to me that Chemonics wants the best people at the absolute lowest price (while billing the government at high rates) and hopes you will work extremely hard to get to the next level you initially interviewed for in the first place! In fact, Chemonics opening a lower level position tracks with the opening and closing of several positions I've seen and applied to over the past year. While I understand that me posting this information probably precludes me from ever working on Chemonics in the future, I’m fine with that. In fact, I have no idea how Chemonics was rated a best place to work in 2023 if this is how they try to get very qualified candidates at rock bottom prices. Someone needs to be honest and Chemonics is no longer a place I would want to work...EVER.
