The initial phone screening with the recruiter went great, and I was excited to be moving on with the process. Did my homework and was prepared as I could be for the interview. In the beginning, the interview went well. There were a few behavioral type questions, but mostly chat. As the interview progressed, it became clear that I was not what the interviewer was looking for. It became more awkward as the interviewer started asking questions about tasks and skills that weren't on the job posting and didn't have anything to do with the position. Looking back, I should have just ended the interview early rather than sticking with it and walking out feeling as if my 20+ years of experience meant nothing.
