Was contacted by a recruiter on linked in. The recruiter was flexible and understanding with scheduling, and we had a nice conversation. Everything went well until it came down to salary expectations. I made the mistake of sharing what I currently made (which was about 10-15k above the starting range for the position) but shared that being a total rewards professional that compensation was not the be-all, end-all for me, and that benefits, learning opportunities, work/life balance, etc... also played a huge part in whether or not a role was right for me. The interviewer did not share any details of existing benefits. 5 days later I was told that my resume was shared with the hiring manager, and that they could not meet my salary expectations. Not sure if they ultimately thought I wasn't a good fit for the role, but any company hiring for a benefits position who makes the decision not to move forward with a candidate because their current salary is higher than the budgeted range - that is a serious red flag and tells me their own team doesn't understand the value of total rewards.... don't make assumptions about your candidates expectations! Ask directly!
