      Senior Software Engineer Interview

      Feb 2, 2023
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Clipboard in Feb 2023

      Interview

I was reached out via a recruiter on Wellfound (AngelList) for a senior swe position. I didn't apply to this job or on their career page. Right off the bat, the organization of the process was giving me bad vibes. After I was sent the link to schedule my coding interviews, two hours later I immediately got an email saying, "We haven't heard from you so please schedule it." The first email was also at 10:30pm and then 12am was when they followed up. It hasn't even been a day and it was in the middle of the night. During the first coding interview, the interviewer didn't seem to care or have any information regarding my background. They asked me a question that related to SQL databases but they didn't want me to write ANY SQL in the code. How are you supposed to work with SQL but not write any SQL queries or to run your CRUD operations? Keep in mind, they are asking for SQL operations for a database, not just updating a datastructure (which was then revealed later). Initially, I thought they wanted me to create a database client, then use that client to conduct your CRUD operations, and close the client after. This is how you usually do it when creating services or working with APIs, since you have to prevent leaks and what not. When I would ask for clarification, he would repeat the same things over and over again, it was clear that he wasn't very helpful. He would then claim that he "explained" the question multiple times in the beginning but failed to say anything different in each of the explanations. They also made me code in a specific language, which wasn't specified. Most coding interviews let you pick your language to do the interview in. In the middle, I was asking clarification on syntax and he responded with, "I expect you should already know how to do this" rather than assist me. Immediately after he said "I've seen enough and this isn't going to work", not even allowing me to finish the question. Quite rude. He said "We've asked this question to many candidates and they all seem to understand, maybe you can take that as feedback." He kept saying that, "I expect a senior swe to know this" but I didn't even apply to the position to begin with. I was just reached out and the company seemed interesting. I didn't expect to get trash talked for interviewing. The interviewer also left in the middle of the interview to get water and what not. He was taking the interview on his couch and also could hear him conversating with his roommates on the side. I'm glad that I didn't go through with this. Wouldn't want to work with people who wouldn't care to explain even the slightest things to you, then claim that they "explained it by repeating it multiple times in the beginning". The rest of the company kind of seems to be disorganized as well.

Submitted a 10-12 page design doc spending 2 full days perfecting it which they said they liked and scheduled my interview, but cancelled at the last step on the day of the interview The recruiter ghosted me. Interview

*BEWARE* 1. As many people said, even if you answer correctly it will be rejected. They're either not hiring or there's something else going on. 2. The test setup isn't correct for the given scripts so this repo clearly isn't even being maintained. The design is fairly poor as well. 3. There's an unknown package installed. I worked in a sandbox and deleted it as soon as I was done

given an api, seeded data with employees, workplaces, and shifts, implement 2 scripts to grab top 3 (requirements showed top = max shift count)
