This was a complete waste of my time and entirely disrespectful to me as a candidate. Their process requires you to complete a case study before speaking to anyone - its the typical Lyft Pricing case study that others have described here. Although I'm still not sure why they don't just hire a recruiter to filter applications on behalf of their 'small product team', I was entirely willing to do the exercise, assuming good faith on their part. I spent over 10 hours on the assignment and worked very hard to get it back to them within 36 hours (as they said they value speed). As someone with over 8+ years in product management experience, I was very confident about my approach, the maturity of the analysis, and the formatting of the submission so it was easy to read. I stated assumptions, outlined all of my variables and formulas, clearly outlined my thought process, included clear images and links to the spreadsheets, and provided a nuanced answer given the case is overly simplified. The case study is not incredibly complicated or difficult. But it can be time consuming and part of what these are for is to convey how someone breaks down a problem to get to a solution. I received a generic email with absolutely no feedback stating that they would not be moving forward with my application. And I'm left wondering what the hell are they looking for to move someone forward. I am genuinely unclear what more they could have wanted, within reason, for a pre-interview case study to green-light someone. Their expectations are either entirely unrealistic, they lack a clear or standardized grading process, they're overwhelmed by the lift to grade these, or they're poor at throttling different batches of candidates. Or maybe something else. But if it takes them time to grade these (as their rejection email states) then they should have the reasons as to why it wasn't an acceptable output? But what do I know. All I can say is don't waste your time doing their case study. If I genuinely thought I could have done better work, that would be on me and I would encourage anyone to apply. As it stands, this has been the worst interview/application process I've ever experienced, purely from how baffled I am about what their criteria is.
