I applied online and was setup with an initial call with the hiring manager the following friday of the week. In general the interview was pretty good. Answered all the questions that were asked. Here's the flow: Interview happened on Friday afternoon.
Hiring Manager: Hi, i am calling from Cloudflare. I see that you have applied for a CSM role and wanted to know more about your profile.
Me: Hi, yes. So, i am within working within the IT SCM department and i am part of the Project Management Career track within my organization. There are just 3 of us globally out of a total pool of 130 . One in US, 1 in EU and i am the one in APAC region. As part of this career track i am also responsible for handling special projects. My current organization spends approx. 60% of the IT budget on operations. So there was a clear directive from top down to bring this to a reasonable level and think of innovative ways to bring down the operation cost. So, the project that i am currently handling is moving one of the applications that i am responsible for to a cloud based solution. I am handling the entire project and all the topics related to the project namely, communication and other challenges such as Data Security, Data Accessibility, Disaster Management etc.
Hiring Manager: So what would be the 3 characteristics that you would list about your organization?
Me: I would say, Integrity, because my organization always keep a transparent business model, Customer Satisfaction and Employee Satisfaction.
Hiring Manager: Fair enough. So tell me what do you know about Cloudflare?
Me: You provide internet which is performant, reliable and secure. So, you manage all the aspects related to Routing, Caching, Firewall, Load Balancing, DDoS Mitigation, WAN Optimization as a service which is scalable, always online, and the customer only needs to pay for what you need.
Hiring Manager: Alright. What you do understand about the role?
Me: So based on what i read about the job description, the role is supposed to handle the post sales activities for a customer. Make sure all the customer requirements are met. Basically being a Delivery Partner for the customer.
Hiring Manager: Why do you want to join Cloudflare?
Me: Based on what i have read about the organization online, you are a pretty small group. I am looking for a move back into consulting given my prior consulting experience. I feel i would get more exposure and grow within a small setup. I have worked with customers in US, EU and i have worked quite a lot in APAC.
Hiring Manager: Alright, sounds good. But seems like you have experience in a different field compared to what we do at Cloudflare. And it would not be exactly consulting interms of what you are looking for. Anyway, what would you do if a customer refuses to pay?
Me: I would try to understand why and what is the reason behind the refusal. I would try to create a win-win situation out of that and if everything fails then it would come down to legal.
Hiring Manager: Fair enough. Tell me about the IT Career Network that you are part of.
Me: Well, we are a group of 21 individuals who are selected out of a total strength of 950 odd IT employees based on previous performances over the years. We are segregated into a group of 5 and we are working on a topic which will be presented to the IT board in July this year. So, we are interviewing a lot of people within our organization to see what we have and what is out there in the market. We are also in touch with Gartner to understand the gaps within our organization and we will present the board with some recommendations of the same.
Hiring Manager: Alright. So, what is your notice period?
Me: 2 months.
Hiring Manager: Are you a PR? Do you require a Visa sponsorship?
Me: No, i am not a PR. Its difficult to get a PR in Singapore.
Hiring Manager: Yes, i know about that. Even i am on a visa sponsorship.
Hiring Manager: DO you have any questions for me?
Me: <Some basic questions related to healthcare and organization strength>
Hiring Manager: <Answered all the questions above to my satisfaction>
Hiring Manager: So, as a next step, you will get to know next week if we proceed with your application. Just to let you know, we have a long hiring process at Cloudflare and sometimes it takes months.
Me: Alright. Thanks for a heads up.
Hiring Manager: Alright, we will let you know next week.
Me: Ok, thanks for calling and have a nice weekend.
Next week Monday morning - I get an email saying they will not proceed with my application. :(
