Cloudflare was EASILY the worst interview process I've ever encountered.
1. It was a 7 round interview process. Not only is this an absolutely unnecessary amount of time to expect out of a candidate, it's totally disrespectful to their schedules. Especially if they are already employed and having to maneuver to match these expectations. Cloudflare needs to seriously re-think their interview process if they really aren't capable of making decisions before 7 rounds of interviews.
2. All 7 interviews will be in STAR-based format, even the "cultural fit" interview. STAR has it's place in interviewing, but when it's the entire premise of how you hire, you're again doing everyone a disservice. Not only is it totally inorganic and non-conversational, it's just an assembly line of "tell me about a time" questions. They do a great job of treating you like a non-person.
3. P.S. when you're giving them answers to those STAR-based interview questions, Cloudflare employees seem to really discourage inclusive language. If you say "we did XYZ", they will make it a point to question you and emphasize that they want to know what YOU did. As if it's not totally possible that you did these things independently while other people were doing them at other points in a timeline too. I found it really weird that saying "we" seemed to totally discredit the things that I did. They definitely want you to be using "me, me, me" and "I, I, I" verbiage.
4. Lastly, the person who ran my "cultural fit" interview was probably the most abrasive and rude person I've ever interviewed with and wasn't even part of the hiring team. Kind of ironic and comical that the cultural fit interview was the interview that I met with someone aggressive lol.
They straight up called me a "bad candidate" to my face verbatim because I apparently was not specific enough in one of my answers. I asked where they felt like I wasn't specific enough so I could provide clarity, and they sat there in silence for 30 seconds before they essentially told me they weren't sure.
Mind you everything had been going smoothly up until this point (although obviously I had my internal frustrations with the process). Given my experience, I know I'm not a bad candidate and bring a lot to the table, but even if you considered me one, I can't fathom telling an interviewee that to their face, especially in addition to the other catty, rude comments they made.
I know I'm coming across spicy in this review lol but I was genuinely just flabbergasted with this entire process and especially this interview in particular. I never did receive a follow-up, so I expect that I will be lumped in with all the others who were ghosted by Cloudflare.
I do not recommend interviewing with this company unless you really feel like shooting your shot, love Cloudflare itself, or need a job. I feel terrible for anyone who puts in hours of interviewing only to get ghosted.
