I applied online. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Cockroach Labs (New York, NY) in Nov 2019
Interview
I had 4 in person technical interviews, as well as a lunch with a non-technical team member. Overall, I did not have a good experience with the interview process. The interviewers did not seem very interested in the work they did or in talking to me, and in particular, one interviewer seems flippant and patronizing during a system design interview. He seemed to be judgmental about my lack of knowledge on specifics on networks speeds and connection types, which seemed unreasonable, since I was applying for a new grad role and only took one course that was an overview on system design.
Overall, the interviewers seemed very set on one approach or solution, and it didn't feel like any alternate ideas were permitted. I can't really describe exact words or actions, but the interview environment was very much not friendly and not personal.
I had the best experience with the one interviewer who I felt I could actually have a good conversation with, but the other three were pretty hard to get through.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
A broad and vague systems design question, three other algorithms based questions.
I applied online. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at Cockroach Labs (New York, NY) in Mar 2019
Interview
It is an open source interview. That is, they advertise and explicitly state the interview process on their website. It is a fairly standard tech interview process. That is:
1 - Initial non-tech phone call with a recruiter
2 - Online coderpad style interview
3 - onsite tech interview
The only gimmicks they add are an interview where you walk through a design problem that you choose, typically something you designed in the past. The second gimmick they preach is that everyone interviewing you wasn't allowed to look at your resume, in order to "eliminate bias".
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
Walk through a design problem you worked on in a previous job.
I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Cockroach Labs (New York, NY) in Oct 2019
Interview
Applied online, heard back within 3 days about a recruiter screen. After that there was a technical phone interview, and then an onsite interview consisting of 3 coding interview and 1 systems design interview. Heard back from each round very quickly.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
Design and coding questions related to problems solved on the job (db related).
