Interview
Opposite of a Thoughtful or Considerate Interview Process
Interview Experience Overview broken down by stage (Reach out, HM screen, Onsite, Onsite Debrief, After Onsite)
Reach out: Head of Recruiting reached out to me via Linkedin to schedule a call to discuss RC role at Coda.io
Initial phone screen: Standard HM phone screen that covered role, team and company before diving into my almost 2 years of experience at a large tech company that rapidly scaled hiring in preparation of IPO where I was an impactful employee until I was affected by Covid-19 layoffs
Pre-onsite: Asked me to prepare one 30 minute detailed & in-depth presentation on my career path, tools & processes I use as a professional and project deep-dive/highlight to be presented to entire team/anyone in the company interested in attending. Additionally, I was asked to prepare a Coda document that I would use to "teach" Web Architecture" to HM and their manager for 30 min. In addition to these two 30 minute presentations, I was told to prepare for a 45 minute "case study" interview and 3 other interviews
Onsite: Standard interview experience outside of "case study" interview turning out to be a 45 minute "brain teaser" (detailed below) and every interviewer describing Coda's company culture as "thoughtful"
Onsite debrief w/ HM: Verbally set the expectation that I would receive interview feedback w/in 48 hours
After onsite & rejection: HM did not follow-up after 48 hour mark passed to update me on the decision process and then rejected me via email without an offer to jump on the phone to discuss decision despite me spending 4+ hours preparing for my onsite, learning their product and crafting two presentations-- truly a disingenuous and opposite of thoughtful candidate experience that left me feeling "mugged off"
Additional insights: HM engaged several of my former RC teammates at the same time for this role, so we all compared notes and found that the Coda team also strung them along by not updating them on their status in the interview process. At the same time as I was in process with Coda, I was in process with their direct competitor Notion and had a wonderful experience interviewing with for an RC role with their team despite not receiving an offer (reasonable take home case study & competency based interview process)
Bottom line-- I do not feel that Coda vales their candidate's time and I would be cautious before seriously engaging in their interview process
Interview questions [2]
Question 1
Brain teaser question asked in "case study" interview
"You are sitting at a table blindfolded with three quarters sitting in front of you (Head, Head, Tail) " "Group them into two groups with an equal number of tails in each pile" "you cannot feel the coins to figure the question out" "talk through your thought process & draw on the virtual white board to arrive at solution"
Personality interview that asked you to choose 3 people in your life then describe how they would describe your strengths from their perspective then walk through what you share in common with these folks
I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Coda
Interview
The recruiter reached out to me for the role via LinkedIn. He couldn't provide a job description, pay scale or talk through benefits throughout the whole process. Overall was not impressed with the company or saw long term longevity. I was to prepare two presentations using Coda's software that were not relevant to the role and was overall just a waste of time for an entry level role - my interview was 5 hours long. Even if I was offered the role, I wasn't going to accept an offer. I was asked very off the wall questions - How would you handle a candidate that became aggressive during an interview process? I had to make a presentation using Coda software that wasn't relative to the job and when I asked for feedback on the presentation, none was provided (they kept preaching throughout the process that they value a live, feedback environment). The recruiter ended up ghosting me after my onsite and I had to reach out to receive an update. Overall, seems very unorganized and wouldn't want to work for a company where leadership didn't practice what they preached.

Tell me about your experience? Weird problem solving scenario that was just off and didn't make sense, How would you handle an aggressive candidate?
