I interviewed for a Program Manager role back in March. The process took about two weeks from recruiter screen to hiring manager interview. About a week after my interview with the hiring manager, I followed up with the recruiter as I had not heard anything and the recruiter sent a rejection letting me know they were 'moving forward with other candidates whose experience more closely aligned with the needs of the role.' This was particularly disappointing considering several points:
- My interview with the hiring manager was scheduled for 30 minutes (this is important to note)
- The hiring manager arrived 5 minutes late (and did not apologize for being late)
- They then spent the next 15 minutes discussing the details of the role and what they were looking for in a candidate
- By the time I was asked to 'tell me about yourself,' there were 10 minutes remaining in the interview
- I was asked ONE behavioral question due to the lack of time
It is quite difficult for ANY candidate to be able to talk through their skills and experiences within 10 minutes, and it is even more difficult for a hiring manager to OBJECTIVELY assess a candidate (without bias) within that time as well. To be told that I was not moving forward because my experiences essentially did not 'align with the needs of the role' was disappointing as I did not feel I was given a fair opportunity to even TALK about my experiences. Overall, it was a poor candidate experience.
