I have read several reviews on the hiring process for Columbia and frankly, they should be ashamed of themselves. This entire process from start to finish was the most bizarre interview experience I have had to date.
It began with a quick 10 minute call with HR (typical HR screen) and I was told during the call that I would be moved on to the next round. After scheduling that interview that was to be conducted over zoom, I logged on to the call where the hiring manager proceeded to ask "Do you have any questions for me?" There were no formal introductions, no pleasantries, no questions about myself as a candidate. Just strange. After I asked her about 27 minutes of questions (which I'm not sure how I managed to do considering the role is essentially and administrative role), HR reached out to me about a week later saying I'd been moved to the final round of interviews which would be held in person at the Columbia University Medical Center. If you know how far the medical center is, you understand the time commitment involved. This interview was scheduled for 30 minutes (again) and was with the SAME HIRING MANAGER. So I traveled an hour and a half to speak to the same woman I'd already spoken with for 30 minutes and similar to my zoom call, there were no real questions about my background, experience etc. just questions about why I wanted the role. She introduced me to another team member who happened to be there and we chatted for a few minutes and I was told I'd know if I'd gotten the role by the next week. Well, the next week comes and I receive another email from HR saying they were moving me to the next round of interviews which was to be another 10 minute call with HR (at this point we are at FOUR rounds of interviews for an administrative assistant role). I take the call, and it's questions about when I'd be able to start, references I could provide etc. This call took place on a Wednesday and I was told by the HR coordinator I'd know if I'd gotten the role by that Friday. Well exactly four weeks have gone by, I have heard nothing from either the hiring manager or the HR coordinator, and clearly I wasn't selected for the role, but with the time commitment given for four rounds of interviews for an administrative role, the least that you all could do is give me the respect of letting me know and thanking me for my time. The only reason I learned I wasn't selected (aside from the obvious ghosting) is I logged into my candidate portal about a week ago and saw that I was not selected.
Again, I totally understand that frankly I was over qualified for the role and you were choosing another candidate, but the least you can do is update me considering the amount of time and energy put into this. I think it's easy for employers to forget that although the job market is in their favor now, the tables will always turn, and the candidates that you treat poorly now will have the upper hand in the job market eventually. Treat people with respect and decency, especially those who you'd dragged along the entire interview process.
