Communicating poor performance ratings can be difficult. How have you handled a situation like this?

It's important to practice continuous employee feedback. The employee shouldn't be hearing about their poor performance on the annual appraisal. When you've been providing honest feedback along the way and providing guidance and support for the employee to improve, is shouldn't be a surprise when you communicate the poor performance rating. I find that most employees want to perform well, so with dedicated coaching and feedback, they can perform well.
