Apply online w/resume. Take a computer test (easy). They send interest cards for all the departments with an opening matching your skills. Then a panel and individual interview. Easy, fast process. Great people. If you don't like the division you are offered an interview for, you can refuse up to three offers before they stop sending you interest cards. When I applied for a clerk position, as soon as I took the test, they sent me a dozen interest cards for positions with everyone from Animal Control to the District Attorney's office. Some offices in Contra Costa County are piercing/tattoo friendly. The dress is business casual to casual. Most of the management try to make a friendly atmosphere for their employees. In some departments, you work 7:30am to 5:00 pm, but you get a paid day off once every other week in exhcange for coming in that early and taking a half-hour lunch. The good thing about working for the County, is there is plenty of room for advancement. There are people who started out as file clerks who were eventually promoted to manage programs. They definitely consider hard work as much as they do education. I give them five thumbs up.

You have to take a test and once you pass you get an email letting you know of the interview. There are about 5-6 people interviewing you. Which can be intimidating if you're a shy person. Overall the questions were simple.

Applied online in October, invited to test in December, notified with test score within 10 days. In January I was notified that my application was being forwarded to a certain department and possibly an interview. I was notified by that department within a week or so and set up interview. I was offered the job 2.5 weeks later, started 10 days later.
