I applied in-person. The process took 2 days. I interviewed at Cook Out (Greer, SC) in Jul 2015
Interview
When I applied to Cookout, the location was not built yet. On the building site, they had set up a tent with tables and the General Manager along with a District Manager would sit out from 2-5pm handing out applications. I picked mine up, filled it out, and returned it the next day. At 9pm on the day of dropping the application off, I received a callback for an interview scheduled for the next day. I arrived and was interviewed by the aforementioned District Manager. It was very cordial; I was asked about my hobbies, personal skills, experience, and why I wanted to work for Cookout. I was asked if I would be willing to train at a nearby location while the Cookout that I had applied to was built, and I agreed. I was hired and asked to provide a background check. Easy peasy!

It's a pretty easy interview. Just be nice and smile and have common sense. Professional dress is not required but you should be presentable. Having some knowledge of the menu could be beneficial but not required.
Manager texted me to schedule an interview very soon after I put in an application. We had the interview in the restaurant. Asked standard interview questions and at the end we discussed hours I'm available to work.
