Unprofessional, Unethical Hiring Practices. 3 months from screening interview to rejection.
My experience interviewing for the iOS engineer role for the Merlin bird app at Cornell University was marked by unprofessionalism and a glaring lack of ethical conduct. I interviewed in November 2023. The recruiter's communication throughout the process was consistently misleading, providing timely updates only to convey ongoing delays in their recruitment process, stating my application was actively under consideration.
To my dismay, by the second week of February, after multiple attempts to seek updates, I was informed that the hiring process had concluded, and they had decided not to pursue my candidacy. This abrupt shift from being actively under consideration to a rejected applicant not only highlights the lack of transparency in their communication but also the unethical treatment of candidates.
For an institution of Cornell's caliber, one would expect a higher standard of professionalism in their recruiting team. Unfortunately, this experience has left me questioning the integrity of their hiring practices. I strongly advise fellow software engineers against applying to Cornell University, where candidates are kept in the dark, and transparency appears to be an afterthought in the recruitment process.
