Digital Prepress Manager asked almost the exact same questions asked on the initial phone interview as in the in-person interview which felt like a missed opportunity on their end. Manager and the Prepress Operator both seemed unprepared to conduct an effective interview. They both had black and white laser copies of my resume without any observable notes taken beforehand. Questions raised seemed thought up on the spot. When I explained that I left a job because of homophobia and abuse back in Los Angeles the manager seemed both aghast and clueless on how to respond. When giving me a walkthrough he said the building was purpose built for the company however I observed prepress operators working next to digital presses in the same enclosed space. Talented prepress operators stay away, The company motto here is, "Close Gaps, Don't Check Boxes" however they are taking it a bit too far with the working conditions. Hardly a good working environment for any prepress operator, small screened workstations, overall loudness, paper dust, toner dust, yelling over loud conditions between machine operators, uncomfortably close and covid unsafe contact between prepress operators to hear what is being said between them…is it any wonder to me the manager himself reported that confrontation and stress was a common occurrence in the past here? No. Rather, he did repeatedly tout they did 22mill in their department alone, but based on the operation I observed It is not happening in an ethical manner. Also a negative the manager repeatedly called me inexperienced even though he had on-the-spot access to my resume which clearly shows I have been doing both digital & litho prepress since I was 17. Inexperienced with over a decade of experience, BA degree, and previously working for a more established business than DCG One, funny. To be honest I didn’t really get the vibe the manager wanted a well rounded experienced operator as he kept stating training would be implemented to bring me up to speed, the vibe that came across was he wanted someone he could taskmaster without talkback. I reached out to my previous manager to see if they actually did their homework and attempted to contact references given, they did not. Bottomline my interviewers were ill equipped to be conducting interviews and doing the job they have based on what conditions I observed. I did not get an offer nor what I felt like was a fair shake in the brief 20 minute interview. In retrospect I would not have been quick to accept an offer here based off the on-sight experience.
Side Note: HR was never involved in the hiring process although they were the ones that issued the decline...I question if upper management is actually in control and aware of how things are being ran.
On a Positive Note: They take visiting guest covid precautions seriously and everyone was wearing a mask. The receptionist was a wonderful person to interface with both on arrival and departure.
