I was called by Human Resources of Gensis Logistics (owned by Exel Logistics and manned by the same employees and managers). I was asked some very simple questions regarding my resume. The HR personel then scheduled me for an interview the next day. After arriving at the warehouse, there wasn't any parking, thanks to the HR department occupying every space. I had to make my own parking space and watch a tractor almost wipe my vehicle out. (First flag, no consideration for the interviewees)
I noticed while sitting in my vehicle one person leaving at the same time another person arriving dressed similar to myslelf. I usually arrive to an interview 15 minutes early, but I noticed they were packing in the interviews and I didn't want to sit with others going for the same position. Seriously, how uncomfortable is that? (Second flag, doesn't know how to pick what they want from resumes)
Once the interview was started, I felt the person that was intereviewing me was in training. But it turns out, it was Gensis HR Manager. She started from the end of my resume and stated one comment and asked one question for each former employer. (Third flag, this will be same person that deals with your employees and making important decisions that can easily affect you and your future with the company)
Stated how many years I worked for the pervious employer.
Asked why I left them.
(Fourth flag, not paying attention to my resume. They should just ask for a application.)
The HR Manager finished her comments and questions for my past employers. At this time a manager finished with the interview of the person I seen walk in before me and they asked me to enter the room. I go into this room and notice they have a small round table which they sit together on one side and place your chair on the opposite side. (Fifth and sixth flag. This makes the interviewee feel herded and belittled. Why position the chairs together on the opposite side? Great way to make the interviewee feel you against them)
At this time the manager across from the table from me informs the HR Manager to "go ahead". This HR Manager then completely changes her demeanor and the questions become an attack. This made me feel very uncomfortable and I almost stopped the interview. I will remember one thing for a long time. She asked me if I have ever been involved in a Startup. A Startup is a third party preparing for a new customer in a new building which includes hiring your staff, installing systems, buying or leasing equipment, etc. (I don't need to continue the flags, that's plenty!)
The HR Manager asked me how long the Startup took. My answer was, it took a year to become completely free of all bugs and errors. But for the most part, the Startup took a month. I was almost insulted when she mumbled that it was a little too fast. Seriously?!? An HR Manager making an operation judgement call against me?
After years of interviewing my employees, I've learned you don't make the person feel uncomfortable or attacked. You will not only make the person very nervous, but there's a good chance you will not get the answer the person really wants to tell you if you just took the time. Also, DO NOT ATTACK! ! ! ITS NOT AN INTERROGATION! ! !
