The interviews went well and those I spoke with were very friendly. The part that seemed weird to me—and probably contributed to why didn't go further—was that they expected designer to be a user researcher as well. I've often participated in user testing and certainly worn many hats but had never been responsible for arranging, managing, and leading user testing.
