Interviewing for a position on Dell's Global Experience Design team was an extremely positive experience despite the large corporate structure. In the cold world of job hunting, Dell was warm and welcoming.
After a phone screening with a recruiter, I had a 1.5 hour phone interview with the hiring manager where we discussed the position, my education and experience. Since the position required relocation to Texas, the team was eager to share their love for Austin, TX and life there. After the phone interview I was invited to come for an in-person interview at Dell's headquarters.
I was flown to Texas, provided comfortable accommodations in a nice area and a rental car. The interview was an all day affair. Starting with a panel interview with five leaders at the smaller (but really large) campus south of headquarters, where the Global Experience Design team lives. After lunch, a second panel interview took place at the main campus and was filled with team members with whom I would be working with. Both interviews allowed me to cover my portfolio and discuss my projects with staff in detail. Interviewers asked questions about the reasoning for specific design decisions, manufacturing strategy, and asked me to evaluate the success of my design solutions based on my personal and user feedback. Both panel interviews were about two hours long. The team was very friendly and took me to local favorites for both lunch and dinner so that I could get acquainted with the area.
No offer but great experience and hospitality.
