I was invited to a screening interview for this position which took about 30 minutes over the phone. From there, I was informed that I would be given a set of "tasks" to complete in order to move to the second round of interviews. I was given 4 tasks, including one that was not even relevant to the position. I was asked to essentially propose a new program and location for their high school population, including all the details of the program, such as budget, curriculum, etc.. I was also asked to design a pre-departure lesson for the program. Anyone who works in the field of study abroad/international programming can attest to the fact that these two tasks are extremely time consuming, even for an experienced professional such as myself. In total, the 4 tasks took me 7+ hours to complete - an entire Saturday. I sent in the tasks as requested and was informed that I would be moving to the next round of interviews and I should be prepared to discuss the tasks in the interview. The next interview was with the program director. She informed me early on in the interview that there would likely not be enough time to discuss the tasks, as she had a long list of questions that she wanted to get through. She then informed me that all candidates for all positions at Democracy Prep have to complete "tasks" and she did so as well 12 years ago when she began her role there. She also shared that the task requirement is simply used to determine if candidates are able to perform the work required in the positions and are not weighed heavily in the interview process, except to advance to the next round. I wish this had been shared with me before I had wasted 7 hours of my time producing high quality work that would not be acknowledged. After the last interview I was informed that there may be another interview, or there may not be and they would inform me of this within the week. I received an email a week later indicating that I would not receive further consideration for the position. I asked for feedback, and did not receive a response from HR.
