      Product Marketing Manager Interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at DevRev in Nov 2023

      Interview

I applied to DevRev based on a recommendation by a friend who is currently a part of the team. Despite having a referral, I had to apply for the same role thrice to be considered for an interview. The interview went over two months and since I had a bias to join DevRev, I stopped interviewing at other companies and backed out of a couple of them. I had to follow up for every round during the process and midway through the process, I was able to get the HR's phone number, which turned out to be of no use. My calls were never picked up. Yes, they were returned a few times but I expected better. I was given an assignment after 3-4 rounds of interviews and persistent follow-ups. To develop the positioning, messaging, and GTM for DevRev support. I put my heart and soul into the assignment and again had to follow up for the panel discussion on the same. In the end, after two months of back and forth, HR got back to me saying the role had been paused and they had stopped hiring for the role. I don't know what to say. If you could go through the assignment, you would understand the amount of work I had put in and the excitement I had for the role. If this had been a freelance gig, I would have at least been compensated for the same. The entire interview experience has been bittersweet and unprofessional.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at DevRev in Sep 2023

      Interview

I applied directly on the website. I got a call out of the blue from HR about my profile being short listed. Had 4 rounds, one with a PMM, one with a Product Manager a case study and HM round. The interview with the PMM was plain jane. “Tell me about your experience as a PMM. What does your typical day look like. How do you plan a GTM. What are the important characteristics of a PMM. What skills do you need to succeed as a PMM.” Was very hard to get a read on where this conversation was going. The interviewer struggled to answer my questions about the business in the Q&A session in the last 10 minutes. I wanted to understand what segment they are focusing on. What’s their current GTM strategy, how are they acquiring customers today etc. Had to follow up with the HR multiple times to get feedback and to know if they’re moving my candidature forward. Second round with the PM was more structured. We had a very interesting conversation on our experience in our respective careers, PM / PMM alignment, we tried to answer open questions together on how to attribute Product Marketing effectiveness, OKRs etc. Walked away with a very good feeling and the PM was kind enough to share the same opinion. 10/10 interviewer. A few days of calling, emailing and WhatsApp’ing the HR ensued to know if they are forwarding my candidature to the next round. Third round was an assignment. I was very surprised to know that the assignment was to create a GTM plan for DevRev Support or Build. Surprised because the hiring manager has shared an opinion themselves on why an assignment on the company you’re interviewing with is bad practice on LinkedIn as comment to another leader’s post. 🤷🏻‍♂️ I was asked to meet the Hiring Manager for the next round. A few minutes into the interview I was told that 10 days earlier they decided to pause all PMM hirings during the leadership offsite. We ended the conversation there. Why would you 1. Give a candidate an assignment when you know you can’t hire? 2. Why would you waste a candidate’s time and tag them along 3. Why are you acting in bad faith? The HR then informed me that she wanted me to have an opportunity to meet the team so 6 months later if I’m interested I can reapply again. What? I didn’t want to write a scathing review but after seeing the other PMM’s review looks like this is a culture at DevRev? And yes, if this were a paid gig, we’d get paid for the in-depth GTM plan that we were asked to make. Terrible. If a senior leader / HR leader is reading this, please work with your teams to fix this. You’ve got a brilliant product and vision, but this just left a very poor taste in terms of the culture at DevRev.
