I've recently reached the phonescreen step with some Diversant contract positions. These recruiters are terrible. They have always called me, I have never applied to them. They always sound very professional and personable at first, and gradually become more aggressive.
It's not uncommon for their recruiters to be so concerned about their own reputation that they'll demand to call your references before even telling you the name of the company you're applying to work with. My references and I found this pretty strange.
When I have gotten fed up enough to ask to be withdrawn, the response is usually an email along the lines of "We didn't want to present you for this anyway. We're glad you've changed your mind". Which is pretty annoying considering the pressure they placed on me to go along with the interview.
