I applied online. I interviewed at Duolingo in Mar 2020
Interview
I received an e-mail from a Duolingo employee (no title given), who expressed that I might be "a good fit" for this position. This person asked me to do a take-home task that should take no more than 2 hours to do. The purpose of this was to "understand how we think" about tasks that would be relevant to this position. After I sent this completed task to the appropriate place, I only received an e-mail saying "Thanks, we got it". I expected to get at least a sentence saying what the next steps would be; i.e. "our team will review your task and get back to you soon." Eventually, I received an e-mail from a DoNotReply address, saying that they would not move forward. No reason was given, and it felt really cold. After much effort was put into this task, I expected to hear from the person who reached out to me first, not an automated response system. I think Duolingo's recruitment team lacks a humanistic approach. The experience really put a bad taste in my mouth about this supposedly innovative, reputable company.
Phone screen, take-home task, then interview with hiring manager.
The hiring process felt one-sided. Both interviewers left less than 5 min for candidate questions. The take-home task was 3 separate tasks with multiple parts, and it was due before even meeting the hiring manager.
FYI, they're very rigid about the Pittsburgh onsite requirement.

Interview
Short interview with another curriculum designer followed by technical task. Task tested ways of breaking down language lessons in digestible chunks. Unfortunately, I did not move beyond this point in the interview process.
I applied through an employee referral. The process took 7 weeks. I interviewed at Duolingo in May 2022
Interview
The interview process was comprised of several steps. After accepting my application, I was asked to complete a short task that served as the basis for my first interview. After that, I had several short interviews with people in different positions in the company.
