Overall process: Initial phone screen with recruiter, then second phone screen with hiring manager, and finally a full virtual interview (~4 hours long).
Notes: I really enjoyed the interview experience with Duolingo up until my rejection email. When I was going through the interview process, the recruiter was super helpful and open about what to expect. My interview schedule even disclosed which topics would be covered in each 1:1 interview.
I thought I did okay. Not spectacular, but I didn't think I totally blew it. Some interviews went better than others. At the end of the day, I could see the outcome going either way.
I wasn't totally caught off-guard when they let me know I wasn't the best qualified candidate, but I was really disappointed and confused that they couldn't provide any feedback because of "policy." This seems like, at best, a terrible finish to what was otherwise a positive candidate experience and, at worse, a veiled justification for discrimination. To be clear - I don't feel that I was discriminated against, but I could totally understand how another candidate might feel that.
I really hope Duolingo reconsiders this policy!
I applied online. I interviewed at Duolingo in Jun 2026
Interview
My process consisted of a recruiter screen, hiring manager interview, take-home exercise, and final round with multiple conversations. My recruiter was great to work with; she clearly communicated the process, was responsive, and prepped me for the final round. She communicated the final decision to me through a phone call and provided helpful feedback. Everyone I met was friendly and helpful! When I say the process was “difficult,” I mean that in a good way. The process requires preparation and thoughtfulness, but it’s fair.

Question 1
Tell me about a time you went above and beyond to provide a positive candidate experience.
I applied online. I interviewed at Duolingo (Pittsburgh, PA) in Jun 2017
Interview
I applied online and was contacted by a recruiter to schedule an initial (~30 min) phone screen. I was then scheduled for a 2nd phone screen (~45 min) with the HR manager. After that, I was given a task/essay prompts to respond to and two days to complete them. I believe the next step would be an in-person interview but I was told that they decided to move forward with other candidates. I wish they would have done more than just tell me I wasn't in consideration (what I could work on, etc.), especially after I spent 2 entire days writing essays.
