I applied on the company website and about 6 weeks later I was contacted by a recruiter for an initial screening. After that the process moved along fairly quickly. I had a phone interview with the department manager and then a phone interview with two other writers. I received a job offer but the salary was 5% less than the minimum that the recruiter and I originally discussed. The offer included the "possibility" of up to a 5% annual bonus. No hiring bonus and, since the company isn't public, no RSUs or stock options. I countered with the original minimum salary we discussed. The recruiter replied that the minimum salary we talked about at the beginning of the process was out of range for the position. I asked for time to think about it. That weekend I saw the company had reposted the position and included a salary range. My minimum salary was within the range they advertised. I declined the offer. The recruiter came back a few days later and said they could offer me the salary that we originally discussed. But I declined. I felt that either the recruiter or company wasn't negotiating in good faith and it was a sign of things to come. I have no idea if the recruiter was communicating with the hiring manager during this process or if they were doing the negotiating on their own.
