The online application included three parts. 1.) Typical resume submittal. 2.) Call a phone number to record a 1 minute description of one of Electroimpact's (EI) videos on their YouTube channel. 3.) About 20 questions on general engineering knowledge, mostly focusing on materials, statics, coding/logic, hydraulics, and machine design, to name a few. It took about 3 weeks until I received an email inviting me for an onsite interview. There was no phone interview between online submission and this invitation. The onsite interview took three and a half hours. It began with one of their high level Staff Engineer Manager. For about 45 minutes they laid out what EI is, what EI should mean to the employees and so on. They talked about how projects are generally structured and the responsibilities of an engineer. After the sit down meeting, I was given a tour of one of their shop floors below the office. After, I was handed off to a different Engineering Manager in a different building, who I was not directly told would be the manager of the applied position. This group was still in the early stages of their projects so the work was entire CAD modeling and design around constraints. The manager asked me standard questions like why I wanted to work for EI and what I am looking for in a job. It only lasted about 30 minutes but I got a good idea of their early project structure. I was then walked over to a different group and building. This group had nothing to do with the position I applied for, but they were at the end of their project which offered a good juxtaposition in timeline. I talked with the manager of this group. They gave a similar talk about EI as the Staff Engineer Manager did. We walked around their shop floor and looked at some of the machines they were building. The second person I talked to in this group was a project engineer. He gave me a more person level about working for EI and got to know me more as a friend. I was finally brought back to the first Staff Engineer Manager, were they asked me to problem solve four problems, two of which were on the online exam. All of the questions are non-numeric and only test general engineering concepts. Once completed there was one more opportunity to ask questions and then you were let go. The following week I was offered the position via email. Based on my current salary and benefits, the offer was a significant downgrade. I responded to the email to negotiate a compensation package more reasonable. It has been over a month and I have not received a response, so I am assuming they did not want to negotiate. Electroimpact offers the opportunity to take on a lot of different responsibilities and be an engineer at its purest. Unfortunately, their compensation package is not up to par with the cost of living in Mukilteo.
