The first interview was fine, the second was an absolute nightmare. Because of COVID-19, this was a video interview. I could tell right from the jump it wouldn't go well. Her general tone and demeanor seemed extremely annoyed. She answered the phone twice and was extremely rude. The questions were unnecessarily difficult and she spent the entire interview shaking her head and frowning to every response. It was so unsettling. Even if I was a bumbling idiot, I deserve basic respect and professionalism. The most notable exchange is when she asked for my 3 methods to combat fossil fuel giants who undermine climate science by lobbying public officials. She responded, "While I'm sure everyone can agree your answers are reasonable and logical in theory, they depend on public officials who actually want to make change, so your answers are not practical." Excuse me? You just asked a 22 year old college student to solve the policy-science divide in the government -- that is a million dollar question literally no one has solved yet. I was shocked to hear such a hopeless and cynical response from an environmental organization. I realize the government is particularly strained right now, but seriously? She also asked what my hobbies were, to which she gave a strained expression with an "alrighty then..." as if my answers were strange. I didn't realize cooking and kayaking were so controversial. We reach the end of the interview, and I start asking questions about the organization and work environment. I try to conclude the interview by asking what steps I should take next, and she responds, "Well, since its clear you don't have any substantive questions left for me, I guess we'll move on" and she shortly ends the interview. Considering its been a month and I haven't heard back, perhaps that was her incredibly rude way of saying there was no shot I'd have any other steps left in the process. After this experience and reading the reviews, I definitely dodged a bullet. I am an intelligent young woman who has worked incredibly hard to get where I am today. There is not a chance I will let a position that only offers $24k a year diminish my value as a person, which I'm sure is a tactic this organization utilizes to make ambitious recent graduates believe they deserve that type of treatment.
