I applied online. I interviewed at Environmental Defense Fund (New York, NY) in Mar 2013
Interview
Heard back about a month after applying for a half hour HR phone interview. That was followed two weeks later by an in-office one with the two hiring managers. The NY manager seemed more focused on personalities meshing and friendlier than the DC manager whom I video-conference with. The two interviews were done separately and had vastly different tones.

Question 1
Was basically asked for a specific marketing plan for their program without prior information on what their current plans entail.

Interview
Applied to a job posting they had on their LinkedIn page and went through both rounds of interviews before an HR rep from the org called and told me that they are experiencing layoffs so they're giving internal interviewees priority to avoid laying off more staff. Understandable but very inconsiderate to have me go through 2 rounds of interviews in an already tough job market if you know you're not planning to hire externally. It was made clear that they had always planned to hire internally so it felt like they'd interviewed me as a kind of "eh, why not?" rather than as a serious candidate.
