I had 2 initial phone calls after submitting my application. One was based on personality and some light technical questions. The second was technical and more intense. I studied SAN to help prepare for the 2nd call. I used feedback from my technical phone interview to prepare for the face to face interview. I also studied video tutorials that Pure created to explain their technology to the general public. (These can be found on the main site and on YouTube).
Each phone interview took about 30 minutes. I was later asked to plan for up to 2 hours of meetings for the face to face interview. I was encouraged not to dress formally by friends and by an invitation email. I went to the interview in jeans and a nice button up shirt. I found lots of questions to ask about their technology before coming to the interview.
In the face to face interview, I spoke with a main interviewer and technical interviewers filtered in and out. At the end I spoke with a floor director to learn more about benefits, discuss my expectations for an acceptable offer, and to discuss my shift availability.
I felt like I was technically weak during the face to face interview (networking, raid, and latency questions were asked), though I didn't totally fail it either. I expressed concern about my shaky performance after the technical portion. My interviewer stressed that existing technical experience was only one of many important factors, and that it was also important that I be a good cultural fit for the company. There is training to help technicians come up to speed. I was given many opportunities to demonstrate or discuss my personality, preferred workflow, general troubleshooting skills, customer service skills, and all around strengths. I had every opportunity to show my interest in the company, and capitalized on that by delving into questions I had about the technology they use. They were very open and easy to talk to about every technical and non technical topic I broached.
Interviewers were friendly, and did everything they could to reduce the stress of the interview. They were willing to coax and hint a little bit during technical questions that were difficult for me. I was encouraged to keep in touch after the interview to ask additional questions or add comments that I didn't think of to say during the interview. Interviewers responded well to my sense of humor, which I applied lightly, particularly when I was stumped on technical questions.
I made sure to send a follow up email thanking my interviewers and (because of the invitation) asking some questions to help me better understand the topics from the technical portion. I got quick responses, and my questions were well received. They were answered thoroughly.
I received an offer by phone after about a week. There was about a week between each application/interview step.
