      Technical Services Engineer Interview

      Dec 21, 2022
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Dublin, Dublin
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Everpure (Dublin, Dublin) in Nov 2022

      Interview

Applied through LinkedIn. Was contacted by recruiter after 4-5 days who explained the hiring process and I booked the earliest available dates. So all in all it was a day or 2 between each interview. All interviews were done over VC including the initial interview with the Pure Storage recruiter. First interview was more on storage with some general hardware, OS and networking questions. Second interview was more scenario based and motivation. Both interviews went ok. The interviewers were actual senior engineers and both were 1 to 1. The final step was an interview with the team manager, which was the easiest of them. He was only asking high level questions and how I thought I did so far in the process, what's my strong/weak side from technology perspective. This is the step which I think the recruiter meant didn't go so well but will get back to that. At the time I thought I did ok, but I didn't hear anything for days. I received a job offer from a competitor which offered 100% remote but PST hours. I was still interested in the Pure Storage position as the working hours were 0700-1600 so I contacted the recruiter to see if they are still considering me. Then to my surprise, they had actually decided not to move forward with me but did not send an email about it. He listed couple of reasons where he said the hiring team felt I lacked confidence, and seemed perhaps nervous. I actually laughed when I heard this as I already had a job offer for a more senior role with a bigger competitor where they gave me the complete opposite feedback, nobody doubted in my skills or confidence. But I suppose I didn't hit all the checkboxes maybe because I was being too modest- And was perhaps too honest about things that I didn't know. Which they thought I was concerned about, My advice would therefore be never sell yourself short. Always prepare really well before an interview even if it is a job you think is easy and have the right attitude. I still think that Pure Storage would be a good company to work for despite the outcome- and even if you haven't used or heard about their product, make sure you read about the product and if possible attend a few courses on LinkedIn or Udemy or at least on YouTube.

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Everpure (Lehi, UT)

      Interview

The recruitment experience at Pure as been overwhelming negative and they need to improve to avoid damaging their reputation with candidates. I have interviewed with Pure Storage TSE for the 5th and final time, with around 10 total applications. I've spend numerous hours researching the solutions offered by PS, interviewing, taking assessments, and taking the free demos of their product to Each time it has gone as follows: 1. Meeting with a recruiter to discuss the role. He is rude and difficult to work with - one of the main reasons I will not be applying to Pure agian. I see he has been alluded to in other reviews. The range for the role was Clearly listed on the job description as $76k to $116K, but the recruiter said they would never hire at or above $100k, even acting like $85k was pushing the limits of what they could do. Don't post a range if you are unwilling to negotiate within that range. 2. Tech Assessement Focusing on Linux, Networking, and Storage. They give you about 10 hours of videos to train on these topics. I've watched them 3 different times, and taken the assessment with a passing score each time. Does this matter? After 2 years, I retook the assessment with an improved score, but the hiring team said it was unecessary and wouldn't affect the proccess. They should understand that a candidate learns and changes over the years and should give them a fresh start when they apply again instead of juding them on past performance., 3. Hiring Manager Interview: This a behavioral interview with questions like "Tell me about a difficult call with a customer", "How do you handle high priority tasks during stressful times?" "Tell me about a technical issue you resolved?" My most recent experience was with a manager that was completely checked out, would not ask follow up questions on my answers or acknowledge them, and would not engage with me when I asked questions about the TSE's day to day work, the support organization, or for feedback on my lab activities I completed in the product demo and my assessment questions. I felt like I was not being listened to and my answers did not matter. 4. The recruiter called back within a week and told me they would not be moving forward with my application. When I asked for feedback, I was told they had no idea why I was not to be moved forward. It doesn't make sense that a candidate that has interviewed repeatedly, memorized the interview prep, prepared with questions about the company and team, and scored well on their assessment would be discarded without any feedback. There should be notes from the interviewer and the recruiter should have those details available. Pure Storage's approach to hiring is extremely inefficient, antiquated, and frustrating to candidates. I wonder if this is an insight into company culture, and if so, I'm glad that I don't work there. I gave them the benefit of the doubt this last time I refuse to have my time disrespected in this way any longer.
