I applied online and reached out to someone I thought might be the hiring manager on LinkedIn. She said she wasn't hiring but she would connect me with the hiring manager who was. Then she asked why I left one of the (giant tech) companies I'd previously worked for. I thought it was an odd question, as I'd been in multiple roles at that company over multiple years and it was not my most recent experience, but I still wanted to answer gracefully. I told her it was because I liked the new challenge the next role offered. She never responded to that message and a few weeks later I got a canned rejection email.
