I was referred to Figma by a close friend. The interview process took over a month, with gaps in scheduling next steps. They recently changed up the process, but it’s still drawn-out imo. I met with 7 different Figma employees throughout the interview process and chatted with a couple other AEs (back channeled) to get a lay of the land. The interviews were all positive, I enjoyed everyone that I met with and that feeling was mutual per the feedback from the recruiter. For the final interview, you meet with the dept head of your respective segment for executive signoff. My final interview was unique and hopefully a one off case hence why I’m sharing my experience here. This guy didn’t dial into the Zoom meeting. As I’m about to message both the recruiter and coordinate over email, he calls me on my cell to let me know there was no conferencing link on the calendar invite. I offered to send him the link, but he said it would waste more time for him to dial-in and wanted to proceed with the interview over the phone. The conversation felt lukewarm from the very beginning. I could tell the guy wasn’t present. For context, he was traveling to SF from Boston for a leadership retreat. Figma has had a couple of down quarters and the conversations were about how the LT will turn things around. I imagine he had his mind occupied with that. I should’ve suggested we reschedule the call, but I didn’t want to continue to prolong my interview. Usually at this stage when prior interviews are positive, it’s more so closing on the candidate vs evaluating. In this case, the guy did neither. He asked me to walk him through my resume, which he claims he had in front of him, but there was so much background noise that I could tell he wasn’t engaged. Also, not the best question to ask at this stage of the interview. At one point he asks me if I’m still there cause he lost me while walking around the office. We wrapped up with questions, which was cut short due to him having a hard stop. One of the questions I had asked him was, “from a leadership perspective, what are some strategies for Q2 and beyond to get the sales org back on track?”, in which he said double down on sales enablement to ensure the team is performing their best. I followed-up by asking, “What tools will I have access to, to help me with account planning, pipeline building, etc?” and he said, look we have all the tools here, ok. In my mind, his response to me validated that the biggest tool that Figma has is this guy. It’s unfortunate for everyone involved in my interview process he didn’t take the time to glance over my interview scorecard or chat with his people managers beforehand. Silverstein lining, I dodged a bullet. If I came onboard, this guy would not have my back.
