I was contacted by a third-party recruiter. The recruited reviewed my resume and gave me the initial job description. I spoke with the HR department at the company, to discuss the benefits package (which was quite nice).
After a week of conversations with the recruiter, I had a one-on-one phone interview with a technical lead. This is where things went sideways. Clearly, Fisher Investments relies on transplants from California, who *HATE* the culture of the northwest (and the Portland market). They described an environment where everything from time management to dress codes were simply not aligned with the culture of the great Pacific Northwest.
I'm used to relaxed dress codes, flexible work hours (so long as I'm fulfilling the duties of my job). This is an anathema to the staff at Fisher Investments, who seem to want to recruit the best and brightest in the market, but don't want to adapt the corporate culture to the expectations of the employee pool here.
In addition, the initial interviewer lied to me on several occasions, most notably when describing the turnover within the team in question (the interviewer was clear that only one person had left the team since 2007, and none in recent years).
I know several people who have left Fisher Investments, including several people who left this particular team in the last two years. Fisher Investments doesn't seem to be aware of the fact that the IT community here is pretty tight-knit and well-connected with each other.
I contacted Fisher Investments after this interview and declined further participation. They asked me to reconsider, and wanted to offer me at a one-on-one. I declined again. This company doesn't value employees nor does it respect the culture of the city it moved to. That was VERY clear from this process.
