I attended a “Day in the Life” assessment at Five Guys to better understand the role and workplace culture. While the introduction from the team was positive, several incidents during the shift raised concerns about professionalism, communication, and health & safety practices. During the assessment, I asked about glove use when handling meat products to understand hygiene procedures. In response, I was unexpectedly asked about my caste, which I found inappropriate and unrelated to the discussion. This made me uncomfortable and distracted from the purpose of the assessment. I also asked about lifting 25kg potato bags and whether staff are given assistance or guidance for heavy lifting. I felt my concerns about safe manual handling were dismissed, leaving me uncertain about the company’s approach to employee safety. Additionally, when asking about protective gloves and safety equipment for handling cleaning chemicals, I did not receive a clear explanation and felt discouraged from asking further questions. Throughout the assessment, some managers appeared dismissive or impatient when I asked for clarification. As a candidate trying to learn, I expected more open communication and professional guidance. Overall, the experience left me concerned about professionalism, communication standards, respect toward candidates and staff, and health & safety awareness within the workplace

The guy was nice enough, but my biggest complaint was that the position was starting as a worker and moving up. It wasn’t actually to move in as Assistant Manager. I feel that if you wanted to make that clear, it would’ve been better to say so.

Telephone interview with Head office HR employee followed by trial 4 hour shift at a site to get a feel of the job. Then an informal chat with a manager at that store.
