I contacted them cold intrigued by the company reviews and their standings in local employer rankings. And their location. I was granted an interview quickly with some paperwork sent via email to fill out and bring with me. Interview was relaxed and the 2 interviewers (one technical, one from HR) were nice, friendly and very positive about the company. At times perhaps too positive. As I asked questions, the answers took much of the shine off of the first impression I had developed. Interview was followed by a computer based test, logic and math-based. The math was unexpected. Well, the kind of story problems you are asked to answer seemed unusual. And there were many. A couple were simple; but then there were the solve-for-2-variables ones that, as a one-time math whiz, I thought would be easy. Yes, honors math always, pre-calc in high school and the trend continued through college. But that all was awhile ago now and interestingly, working as an experienced successful dev in the industry for many years, I've never ONCE (that I can remember) had to solve a 2-variable math problem. Not since school. I'm sure I could have re-mastered the techniques quickly, but not in the middle of a timed test with many of these questions and low motivation. With time flying by and an overall lack of interest, I left the test pretty early with many of the questions not answered. Back at my current job I asked a younger, smart coworker to solve the problem revolving around loose change. He gave me an answer a short time later. He simply put together a spreadsheet and poked numbers to figure it out. Cheater! HINT: If you are going to interview here, actually practice beforehand solving for problems with 2 or more variables. Back to my initial perception vs. reality. The company does rank high in local polls and even with the minimal reviews here. It IS a beautiful campus with seemingly nice and happy employees there. I believe I am trying to leave an environment that is quite a bit better so this wasn't the company for me (even if I had mastered The Test). PTO was fixed and not generous. Worse, the building is open fixed hours (from memory, 8-5) and there is no coming in early to leave early or late/late. There is no working weekends, which some will take as a great thing, but you can't trade working a weekend day in trade for another. And there is no working from home. This seemed very odd in this day and age and was a show-stopper for me. Massive snowstorm? Figure out how to get to the office. My interviewers raved about the benefits and generosity of the company/owner. However, when I mentally compared it to what I would be leaving, it would be a downgrade. If interested in this company, interview and decide for yourself. Ask many questions and make sure you form a clear picture for yourself, working past the enthusiasm of the interviewers.

Applied online and a few days later received an email where I was I invited make an appointment to come in and take the assessment exam. I know bombed too many of the assessment questions due to not having done basic algebra equations for decades. But it was a pleasant experience as far as these things go. And the facility is a really nice space to be in.

Applied online and receive an email for the interview in couple days. After setting up a time for the interview, I was sent a questionnaire which I was supposed to fill prior to the interview. I have read their reviews and I knew they empasize on questionairre , I took time to fill questionaire right. About 13 questions but seems like its just a way of directing you towards their final important question : What's your salary requirement? I have played this game before and I have understanding of these recruiter like to cheat in this games. I am H1B visa holder so I know they will try to get more blood out of me than usual and I was prepared for that. I searched on Glassdoor what's the minimum salary they offer for Senior Software Engineer ($134K). I noted that as a answer to see what happens. Received a call from Recruiter who was not even suppose to interview me that day. Without any formal talk (remember I am H1B holder so I can treated as slave like this), I was directly asked how do you come up with this number. Here's how our talk went (in brakets are my opinions or thoughts): Recruiter : Hello is this SomeIndianName? ME: Yes, this is SomeIndianName. How are you doing today? Recruiter : So $134K how do you come up with this number? Me: Well to be honest, thats what I think I am worth and also its lowest floor value of salary you offer to Senior Software Candidates. Also I was not sure how good your benefits are so I had to consider that as well. Recruiter: Benefits ? You mean PTO (remember I am non-english H1B holder so let's generalize and say he only knows about PTO). Me: No Recruiter, I meant PTO, HeathCare, 401K. Recruiter: We have 2 Weeks of PTO Time and ofcourse HealthCare Me: 2 Weeks as in 14 days or 2 weeks as in Sat/Sun included? Recruiter : 10 Days (2 weeks basically if you take continuous vacation) (Clap , Clap , Clap wow. Thank you so much. ) Me: Recruiter, that is very low PTO time but I am negotiable to offer I have made. Recruiter: Sorry that's too high for us. May be you would want to take some time and think over it. Let me know if you decided to go for salary lower than that. (Yep, poor immigrant. You will come around eventually) Me: What is your salary range? Recruiter: $90K to $100K depending on your experience and expertize. (Ok Game ONNN) Me: Recruiter, that is too vague of an offer and very long range. Can you meet me in the middle and fix salary of $95 contignent on successful completion of your interview process? Recruiter: No I cannot guaranttee that. Sorry we cannot go forward. Me: Thank you for being upfront. But what's the problem? I am agreeing to your salary range and I just want you to agree on minimum salary I would get within your range if I passed all of the interviews. If you do like me as a canadidate that would be salary. Recruiter: No we just don't have all the details and honestly that's too high. Me: Ok. I mean it was your range? (Oh God, he got me. Let me come up with some excuse.) Recruiter: Let me touch base with my team and I will contact you if something changes. (considering I wouldn't have any chance to further low ball you in future like may be upto $75K) Me: Ok. Sounds Good. Have a nice weekend. Recruiter: Bye. Received following reply from another totally different person (see the pattern here. Keep things seperate, someone else emails, someone else interviews, someelse is recruiter : so no one is liable for any communication : YEP) : We appreciate you taking the time to speak with us today. At this time we have identified other candidates whose background (read how much we can lowball their salary) and skills (read how easily we can tame them with our skills) appear to be a better fit for our organization.
