I applied in-person. The process took 2 days. I interviewed at Gap (Pearl, MS) in Nov 2014
Interview
The best time to apply to retail is around October because of Black Friday preparation. All I did was walk in, ask if they were hiring, and was asked to come in for an interview the next day. Now of course, this won't be as simple for everyone. However, if you present yourself as a competent and professional applicant, it shouldn't be that big of a deal. You will need to complete an assessment online along with an application. The online assessment asks some pretty "duh" questions, such as "is it okay to shoplift?". However, you'd be surprised at how many people fail the assessment portion, thus, disqualifying their entire application!

Group interview with other candidates with the store manager. Arrive at the store and wait for other candidates. Then interview happens in break room and it lasted roughly about 30-60minutes
It was a group interview of about 10-12 people. If I remember correctly they take you to the back, the stock room, and ask almost everyone the same question. The interview lasted about 30 minutes.
It was very easy, one in person interview with the general manager and then I was accepted! Mainly personality and behavioral questions were asked, and I think enthusiasm on my end helped the most.
