I applied through a recruiter. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Gemini (Portland, OR) in Feb 2020
Interview
I was given a take home assignment that takes approx 60 hours of unpaid time. Two weeks after the assignment submission I got scheduled for a 3 hours remote video interview with 5 interviewers. When I asked, I was told they would rather do a remote video interview instead of an "onsite" for candidates they are keen on (probably to save money). The video interviews were straight forward and mostly behavior questions.
I was asked multiple time during the process if $130 000 (Total Compensation) would be something I would consider as a salary compensation. To which I answered, it ain't that competitive for a 5 years experienced engineer. Eventually I wasn't offered anything.
The outcome was very surprising, I received positive feedback along the way from the external recruiter. I was told I did very well in the assignment and that the code was high quality. I did indeed put my heart and soul in to this test. They liked the fact that I spent extra time making documents and diagrams to explains the rational behind my design.
One would think, if he spends, an unpaid, 60 hours on an interview process at least he'd been given a rejection reason or at least an assignment correction. Nothing. 60 hours just gone in the wind.
Given the amount of time and extra care I put in to this, my conclusion is that they are super super super super picky with nothing to show for in reward. It ain't worth the risk given the reward. The take home test is a nice idea, but your time is best invested doing problem solving exercises and prepping for the traditional tech interview.
Interview questions [2]
Question 1
Tell me about a time where you had to learn something new to do your job and how did you approach the matter.
OA -> Recruiter Call -> Technical Phone Screen -> HR Call -> Offer
Rejected after technical phone screen. Interviewer was on their phone during the coding problem, felt like they were trying to rush to fill the position. Overall bad experience.

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Gemini in Nov 2024
Interview
The interview process involves HR screen, HM screen, 1 live coding, 1 systems design and 1 behavioral.
If you need that many loops to decide if someone is right for you, then I don't know what to say. I never liked live coding but I politely declined after I saw live coding and systems design. To me, that is not the best way to showcase my skills. However, the interviewer, said that the HM was "very interested in me". So ... after 1 month... I finally got to talk to the HM... and was very interested in what I had to say.
Then... rejection. I get it, no one is perfect. But if you have to take 1 month THEN live coding, systems design and more... your ability to make a decision on a hire is not good.
I should have declined again after they asked me to reconsider. Thankfully, bullet was dodged.
