I applied online. I interviewed at Gemini (New York, NY) in Apr 2020
Interview
The process dragged for 2 months. It was somewhat ad-hoc, it was not clear what the next step in the interview process would be till after that step was cleared. Some of that is my fault for not asking for the steps upfront. The very last step (for me) was a homework which took much longer than the suggested time. They were kind enough to give me a few extra days to complete it. Then there was a long period of waiting for it to be evaluated. I had to send a reminder whose response was that the team was busy and would get back soon. The next message was the standard automated rejection response. Considering how much interaction I had had with the recruiter, I found that last bit somewhat cold and unexpected.

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Gemini
Interview
Interview process did not leave me impressed with either the company or the team. Interview was managed through an internal recruiter who was often incommunicative. It started with a few quick screening questions about advanced-ish python features, then there was a technical interview which involved some medium leetcode programming questions, and regurgitating the formulas for gradient descent and logistic regression. The last stage I got to was an ML exercise which had clearly been slapped together as quickly as possible: the data provided with the project had been extracted incorrectly (so that most of the lines in the csv only contained null values), and most of the data provided did not make sense with the stated business case of the project. It was frankly hard to convince myself to work on this project after seeing how little effort they had put into creating it and deciding what they wanted to get out of it.
