STEPS
1. Recruiter call
2. Hiring manager call (with VP)
3. In person Interview - Demo, Hiring Manager Interview (same VP)
EXPERIENCE
The VP actually asked me to, and I quote: “Sell me a car. Act as if we’re actually in a dealership and I just walked in.” WOW!
There was no attempt to even look at my qualifications or ask me at all about them— 6 years of startup sales experience. They sold the role as a strategic consulting gig on the phone, but in person broke it to me they were pretty much hiring for an entry level role.
They made me sign an NDA and the VP still wouldn’t share any details on company growth/revenue— a really bad sign. Although in their defense, it honestly felt like the VP simply didn't know what those numbers were, or even the definitions of the terms themselves (an even worse sign IMO).
And we had this interview finally after cancelling on me twice in a row last minute, “sick” both times (back to back a week apart, with a new "sickness” the morning of the second appointment).
The second time I had actually made the hour commute to the office before finding out.
When showing up on the day that the interview was actually held, none of the THREE phone numbers on the door worked (the original, the backup, and the backup for the backup). I spent about 20 minutes just waiting around until they finally saw my email.
THOUGHTS
If you do some research you’ll find that Glowforge is purely a laser printer that was marketed as a “3D printer” in the past and had a huge crowdfund sale because of it. It's not a real 3d printer, it only makes vertical cuts. It is marginally better than other laser printers, but is pretty much just a printer company (not a high growth startup). Lots of bad rep online for how slow they shipped the crowdfunded units, and now sales have likely slumped given that hype has passed (also obviously because they are hiring to start a sales function).
OPINION
I would highly recommend not investing the time I did, as you’ll be looking to work at a glorified printer company that’s seen it’s best days behind it. No clear idea of where they want to go. This is not a high growth startup, and the majority of the large funding amount was from crowdfunded units which have come and gone (investor interest is not as high as the numbers make you think). I was very excited for this and had some great ideas, and it only took an hour in person to realize the heavy miscalculation on my part. That being said, if you’re looking for an entry level role, you could certainly do worse. The engineer and recruiters I spoke to seemed very nice & genuine. Just need to leave an honest assessment as I'd like to save a similar person from wasting valuable time.
