      Senior Product Designer Interview

      Aug 7, 2020
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Glowforge in Jun 2020

      Interview

You must sign an NDA before beginning the interview process. Initial 20 minute phone screening with HR; general meet and greet, brief review of my background and explanation of the role. However, this first phone conversation after about 5 minutes of me speaking about myself, then turned into a 15 minute conversation of what felt like a sales pitch for the product. The interviewer went into company details about Glowforge and their current success with investors and how wonderful their current growth is doing. None of this felt necessary for a conversation about a designer role. The next and final interview continued with this path of a sales product pitch. Very specific questions were asked about issues they face as a business, which seems like their biggest hurdle – their lack of growth. The questions were clearly being read off a pre-written dialogue while notes were being taken on my answers. Lots of typing by the interviewer which was not only annoying but made the dialogue appear one-sided and that she was very much not engaged in the conversation. The interview turned from what was a conversation about an open position to blatantly mining me for my ideas. At which point, I almost ended the conversation knowing this was not a job interview but rather information gathering to better help inform their decisions in regards to the user experience of their site. Looking back, it appears this position has been perpetually listed and yet never filled. This company is not looking to hire you, they only want to steal your ideas. This interview process, if you want to call it that, was a waste of my time. If you want ideas on how to better improve your site experience and sell more products online, spend the money and do what other companies do and conduct a focus group study. Do no waste peoples time with phony job postings.
