      Engineering Interview

      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 days. I interviewed at Glowforge in Apr 2022

      Interview

After talking to a single very low level employee (that was not part of the technical team) they wanted me to spend several hours on a 3rd party app filling out technical information about a very unrelated set of scripts, which seemed completely irrelevant to the job description. It was the most involved take home or coding test I've ever been asked during an interview and it seemed really inappropriate to me. It's something that would have required me to write down a lot of notes to connect how the parts of the fake app were even connected, as it included very little information and was across over a dozen scripts. After seeing their F rating on the BBB and all of the negative reviews here saying they never replied after doing this type of work, I decided to not complete the 3rd party review as it was too involved. I hadn't spoken to the team or managers, and wasn't given any opportunity to ask them about the position or learn about the team before being asked to do this extensive work. I got a pretty strong feeling that this company is in the process of falling apart internally, especially since they're outsourcing the technical part of the interview and it has to be completed to proceed. If they're this inconsiderate to candidates, I can only imagine how difficult it is to actually work here. Also, the product is kind of terrible.. it's very expensive, prone to breaking and starting fires, lots of customers have to replace it multiple times, and the moment their company goes under it'll just be a giant, useless paperweight because it requires a connection to their servers to work. Even the medium you use needs to be bought from their store. I really wanted my concerns about the app to be addressed and explained before being given take home work to go work on by myself. If they're this concerned about hiring applicants that are lying on their resumes, they should just ask for reputable references and only speak to them through company email addresses. It doesn't have to be this difficult. No senior engineer will do this much work for an interview at a small company, especially when the pay band is a bit low.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Here is a random app, how would you design this part of it? They said multiple answers were correct, but this is wrong and there is only one correct answer if you understand the subject well enough. Add a class into this script that will pull from several other classes to return fake data.
