I did not do the usual paperwork and wait. Hope someone calls. I had worked as a fabricator for a company in the same business a while earlier. I drove to where I knew the fabrication shop was located, asked where the supervisor is. When I found him, I introduced myself and told him I was looking for work. I let him know I had done the same type work in the past and asked if he would be willing to give me an oppertunity. We talked for maybe 5 min. He gave me a small stack of papers to fill out. They were some math problems and the like, working fractions, seeing if I knew how to use a measuring tape and convert from decimal to fractions of an inch etc. I then filled out the basic work history paper and handed it over to him. He then took a few minutes looking it over and asked when I could start. I said Today. He told me to come on in the following morning and I was hired.
I wish this is how it still was these days. You meet a man face to face, ask if he is hiring and find out right away that day if you are going to have a new job. Now days it is all online email resumes and you never get to see anyone face to face unless you are lucky enough to get an interview notice.
I say, for any job, If you can, then go find the boss and introduce yourself and let them know you would like to work for them. Especially in the construction and trade business.
