I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Grubhub (New York, NY) in Nov 2016
Interview
The process was meticulous and took about 3 weeks. It started off with a phone call with the Technical Recruiter who reached out to me on Hired Inc. We had an in-depth discussion about my experience with my previous work places and about the role.
Next was a 30 minute chat with the hiring manager. This was more about my work and getting a better understanding.
After this had an hour long remote coding session with a Senior Engineer. He asked one coding problem and one design question.
Once this completed, I heard back from them immediately within hours requesting for on-site interview. They flew me out of San Francisco into Newyork and put me in a very nice hotel in Manhattan.
Onsite consisted of 4 1-1 rounds meeting Lead Engineers and Engineering managers from different teams. The questions largely revolved around system design, architecture and optimizing while writing some code as well. It was a very different experience where they tested your knowledge and pushed you to think better when coming up with a solution.
They got back to me real quick with an offer. It was pretty generous and fell in-line with my expectations. So didn't have to even negotiate.

Question 1
Nothing out of the box here. Make sure to prepare well with algorithms and have a good conceptual understanding of distributed systems.
Three steps: Behavioral screen with the recruiter, followed by tech screen with an engineer, followed by virtual onsite with leetcode style questions in addition to system design and behavioral interview rounds.
I applied through a recruiter. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Grubhub (Chicago, IL) in Jan 2025
Interview
I was contacted by a recruiter in January 2025, and scheduled a first-round live-coding interview with a tech lead. She was very helpful and supportive and it was probably the least stressful live-coding I've ever done. The interview involved coding functions for distributed architecture.
I was very quickly scheduled for a second and third interview, one a behavioral interview with the person who would be my manager, and a final live-coding interview with another engineer. The behavioral interview covered my experience with different technologies specific for the job and detailed coverage of one of my recent work projects. The final live-coding interview was also very relaxed and covered coding with data structures, specifically a linked list.
I was told the job was mine if the position was approved by the company's new owners, Wonder, after which I read that Wonder fired 25% of Grubhub's staff, and I haven't heard back since. The people I had the opportunity to talk to were magnificent, though.
