Process kicked off with a HR getting in touch in response to my application. He set-up an initial screen, was extremely friendly, helpful and willing to provide additional information. The next step was a phone screen with a Team Lead. My interviewer was definitely a pretty senior Data Scientist with a lot of impressive experience and a lot of domain expertise; knowledgeable and intelligent. It started out with the interviewer being only slightly adversarial, but this escalated really fast. The interviewer and I had a lot of domain overlap having worked on similar projects; them having the advantage of experience. This quickly lead to the interview turning into a grilling session provoked by the fact that a lot of the past work I had done in the realm of feature engineering (given the nature of data and limitations respect to the position) was extremely 'hacky' and would not have gone done well with a lot of formal academics. I was aware of this and tried to present it in a results oriented fashion emphasizing how it benefited the company. There was a marked shift in the tone of the interview at this point despite me ceding to the better judgement of my interviewer. I think it was clear at this point to both parties that I did not meet the expectations of the interviewer (and being questioned in the tone was doing nothing to make me feel comfortable thinking about my responses) and it would have been a much more positive experience to engage in some light probing and then courteously wrap up the call. The interviewer however insisted on dragging out the call and even pulling up more technical questions within the same domain that I wasn't faring too well with. At this point the interviewer sounded extremely critical, adversarial and dismissive. The interviewer concluded the call exactly at the end of the hour, with an obligatory "I can answer any of your questions". Having now interviewed with a few leaders in Data Science I can definitely relate that I've never been put-down for having a difference in opinion. All experienced professionals have responded to a difference more along the lines of "That's an interesting opinion and quite contradictory to what I've seen over my experiences - would you like to share what lead you to that viewpoint?" and less in the tone of "Do you really think your opinion warrants any merit when a lot of academic experts believe otherwise?" Got a rejection within a week. The process was extremely streamlined and executed professionally.
