      Senior Software Engineer Interview

      Apr 23, 2018
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Chicago, IL
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at Guaranteed Rate (Chicago, IL) in Mar 2018

      Interview

I have had 1 phone interview with recruiter, 1 interview with Manager of Development over Skype, and a take-home skills assessment. Phone interview with recruiter was generic, and focused more on my experience + new roles expectations. The one with manager was more technical, and consisted of basic OOP questions + brief online exercise that had to be completed while on the Skype call. Then, I received a take-home assignment (console application that had to demonstrate WebAPI capabilities with 80% unit tests coverage), which took about 5 - 6 hours to complete. However, even though all the designed specs were reflected in the code, and all the tests were passing, I was told that they are rejecting me because my assignment was "not up to par". My requests for clarification & feedback were completely ignored. Clearly, these people don't value the time of their employees if they treat their candidates like that.

      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 4 days. I interviewed at Guaranteed Rate (Chicago, IL) in Dec 2019

      Interview

Poor communication. Unprofessional/short/unresponsive. Awkward "live coding" video chat with screen share. Then a poorly designed "homework" test (memory card game) that they tell you to have done in 24-48 hours. The whole thing tells me that they want to hire junior developers and don't have the time for a well thought out interview process. Happy to identify these shortcomings early in the process.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Live coding includes functional basics, currying, missing number search, object merging, and outdated JS Class structure.

      Senior Software Engineer Interview

      Dec 7, 2017
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Chicago, IL
      No offer
      Neutral experience

      Application

The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Guaranteed Rate (Chicago, IL)

      Interview

The process started on LinkedIn. I was contacted by the recruiter, we set up a phone conversation and went over the company and she explained the role, this went on for about 30 minutes. Next was the technical phone screen. Asked about experience and technical questions followed by a live coding exercise. This lasted about an hour. I was then asked to solve an engineering problem and upload my solution to GitHub. The exercise requires writing a file parsing program along with a Web API service accompanied by unit tests. This took some time to complete as well,I would say between 2-3 hours to complete and upload a finalized solution. Finally came the on-site interview. This was a bit of a marathon. The interview lasted 6 hours. Upon entering I was greeted with a food menu, as lunch was being provided. This was quite pleasant, albeit an unusual way to start an interview. The interview was broken down into 1 hour sections. Part of the process includes reviewing your submitted solution followed by a whiteboard exercise. The other portion being behavioral questions, I did realize after speaking to a few people that they seemed to be recycling the same questions amongst each other. All in all a very time intensive interview process.
