      Sales Assistant Interview

      Gloucester, England

      Negative experience

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at H&M (Gloucester, England) in Jul 2017

      Interview

My first interview ever. Applied online, answered a few questions about previous experience and uploaded my CV. A few days later i was invited to a group assessment. Got there, and there was about 14 of us all together. They were only expecting 11 to come and everyone said they had emailed to say they could come, so there may have been a lack of organisation on H&Ms part. We went into a little room with a long table and everyone squeezed around. They asked us questions about H&M, and basically the person who answered was the person who shouted the answer loudest. I am quite a quiet and reserved person, so didn't manage to answer any even though i new some of the answers (I know this is my fault, but i can't help but think that quieter people can be good workers as much as louder ones, so i would have preferred if we had been asked a few individually or split into smaller groups to answer first). We were then given a random piece of paper with a question on. For example, which country would you love to visit. Easy enough, right? Well my question was 'If you could invite 5 celebrities to dinner, who would they be?'. Yea, not 1, not 2, not even 3, five!! I had a few minutes to think before it was my turn to answer as i was the third person to go, and i could only manage to say two which are not actually the people i would take to dinner at all. They said they would come back to me but didn't in the end. I felt really stupid because i couldn't think of 5, which definitely didn't help my confidence in this interview. Then we were split into groups. However, due to the way the table was, i was far away from most of my group so couldn't chat to them easily (the table was like this [____ and one person of the group was on the corner, then the other 2 were on the long bit and i was next to them, so i couldn't speak to them easily at all). The two people furthest away from me grabbed a magasine each and there were no more on the table so me and the other girl next to me (Who was lovely) had nothing to do, we ended up just sticking things onto the sheet. I know i should have asked for a magasine for us to share, but i didn't want to look rude, it would have probably shown leadership skills though but who knows. However, those other 2 should have been working in a team, which they clearly were not, so hopefully they didn't get the job. Then it was finished, it took 2 hours over all and i went out feeling extremely disappointed in myself and dreaded the idea of ever having a group interview again. I got a phone call saying i had been unsuccessful and wouldn't be getting a 1 to 1 interview. I have since had a group interview at Asda, and then got a 1 to 1 interview the next day and have since got the job! I was dreading the Asda group interview, but it was so much more enjoyable and i came out thinking actually that was alright. And luckily i didn't get asked 5 people i would take to dinner aha

      Application

I interviewed at H&M (Leeds, England)

      Interview

Group interview. 10 candidates in a small dingy room. Poorly organised and interviewers showed very little interest or skill in conducting an effective interview. Were in pairs for the whole thing, no way to stand out and other people taking credit for your ideas. No observation of how you handled planning and answering the tasks in your pairs, interviewers just sat there having a chat.
