We were asked to come to the store after the shopping centre had closed, which made it a bit hard to get inside. That coupled with the poorly worded, obscurely email didn't leave the greatest first impression.
The first thing we had to do was fill out a small sheet; it had questions like if we went to uni (if so where), term-time availability and holiday availability, how many hours you would like to work, where you see your career path for the foreseeable future (kind of a strange question, but whatever), etc. We were then split into groups, and were given a handful of retail oriented questions to answer. We then had to make a poster of what customer service meant to us which was kind of juvenile, but hey, was fun I guess. Afterwards, we were sent off to make an outfit for a celebrity (which I admit I did terribly at...). The way that we were just expected to jump in and answer questions lead to us talking over all the time and me getting frustrated. I tried to be polite and let the others speak before me, but that proved to be detrimental as I wasn't left with much to say. It was my fault entirely for not being assertive enough- don't make the same mistake I did!
The final thing we had to do was give a 10 second pitch on why they should hire you. It was quite awkward, with everyone saying generic stuff. I did get a few laughs from the managers which gave me a shred of hope, but I then saw that no one was making notes at all so my funny quip would most likely not be remembered.
All in all it was a weirdly structured interview, but the hands on activities were somewhat enjoyable. I recommend you to be prepared with a style in mind, so you don't make a fool of yourself when choosing an outfit like I did.
