I applied in-person. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at H&R Block (Kamloops, BC) in Dec 2017
Interview
The interview process was easy. Those who passed the class with the minimum percentage were offered an interview. From there they were offered a position. Company was very open to one's other commitments (other job, family, requests)

I applied through other source. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at H&R Block (Ottawa, ON) in Feb 2018
Interview
Once I completed their first level tax course, which I paid about $400 for, and passed with at least an 80%, an interview was granted. They were interested in hiring me. I attended two days of training which was to be paid for, and I NEVER was paid for. Only after that was complete did they send me their contract, which contained a restrictive non-compete clause that I could not agree to. It would have prevented me from gaining employment in bookkeeping once I the tax season was over, and that did not seem rational for a short term, minimum wage position! This company is close to being a multi level marketing organization is that their pay structure is minimum wage for anyone starting (regardless of prior experience) and then commission percentages increase as you return year after year to work for them. So two people working a similar return, but with one person in their first year and in the forth... makes a VERY DIFFERENT amount for that return. If you leave the company before the end of tax season for any reason, you are NOT paid the commission owed to you. In the interview they call it commission, in the contract it is called a "bonus". Also, during the interview the manager actually answered a call on their cell. While they did apologize and acknowledged that doing so was unprofessional - they answered it anyway!?
