      Application

I applied through other source. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at HCL (New York, NY) in Oct 2016

      Interview

Standard process, was referred to the senior leadership of the organization by someone I have personally known for 10+ years. Rather a straight-forward process. Had an initial phone call on Tuesday, then was asked to fly to NYC that next Thursday; that implied some level of 'urgency' to me. Had what I felt was a good solid meeting in NYC that laster over 4 hours. Flew home that same day with a generally good feeling. Provided detailed reference information and why I would be a good fit for the role, it was essentially the same role I had in my prior position at IBM, and HCL had acquired a number of IBM tools on a IP licensing deal. After that, was generally quiet for weeks, then got a "Dear John" type of phone call. Would have greatly appreciated more frequent/realistic communication during the process. Bottom line, guess I am glad I was not offered a position, as it would have benefitted the firm that had let me go (IBM). It became obvious to me after very limited follow-up they were just not interested, or they were looking at their timeline and not really considering mine. I just backed away after considering all the options. I have followed who they are looking at and have hired through disinterested 3rd parties, I think they want someone they can tell what to go do, versus an independent thought leader. Wish these folks all the best, it's a new business for them, and a new business model in general doing an IP licensing deal to help prop-up a business line that IBM is no longer interested in (which just amazes me, it's making to IBM walking away from their long-time customers!). Just don't get that.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

This was where is got interesting. The initial person I interviewed with was traditional. The second fellow, the Division Head was a very bright extremely well educated and grounded fellow. He essentially asked me (I am paraphrasing here)... "What is it that we will run into that could negatively impact this business as we try to get it off the ground - I'm looking for those things we are not thinking about or planning for right now.
