Outside recruiter connected me with the company and progressed through four virtual interviews over the span of a month. A group was traveling so they coordinated my travel with their trip to meet the hiring manager.
We visited two fulfillment centers. Hiring manager stated how one facility was experiencing some struggles and wanted me to provide some insights as to what I saw afterwards. Towards the end of a long 10 hour day, we were alone and he wanted to know my thoughts about the facility. I prefaced with saying how I knew the GM was relatively new and my observations are a snapshot in time. I have no idea what the facility looked like a few months ago or a year ago.
My feedback was focused on process flow and general organization. I was careful with my wording and eased into topics to show my level of experience without coming across harsh or judgmental. There was clearly room for improvement in a number of areas. At first, the conversation was healthy as I shared observations, pointed out where I would dig if engaged in this operation to learn root cause and make improvements. I felt the people were engaged and eager to do well. I pointed out a few metrics that probably were not trending well and the reaction was affirmative. It was a two-way conversation where it seemed like we were aligned with how we shared a similar approach to making improvements. As the conversation was winding down, the hiring manager suddenly became very defensive of the facility GM saying how he had not been in place for long.
I emphasized again how I wasn't judging anyone. My observations were about processes, training and facility appearance. I'm not sure what nerve I struck but clearly something was off. I was not expecting an emotional reaction and didn't think about asking where I may have stepped over a line.
